Lake Lanier Weekly Fishing Report

August 11, 2023

Water Level: 2.60 feet BELOW full pool. Down from .33ft from a week ago.

Water Temp: Mid 80s.

Water Clarity: The clearest water is on the main lake and the mouths of the main lake creeks. The water increases in color the further back in the creeks and up the rivers you go. With the rain and wind over the past week, there has been a decrease in visibility on the main lake. The water is still clear, just not to the extent we are accustomed to on the main lake.

I spent 5 of the last 7 days on Lanier. The fishing this week was consistent with what I saw last week. For August, I would rate the quality of fishing as good, but one may have to work for the fish and it is very much a timing game.

The two best baits for numbers this week were the drop shot and the Jerk Shad. I changed up my DS worm this week and went with a 4.5in worm over the 6in worm. However, I stuck with the Aaron’s Morning Dawn for the color.

For the Jerk Shad, Lanier Baits Blue Ghost was very productive when there was cloud cover. When the clouds broke, I switched up to the FZNH20. The key to the jerk shad was to keep it under water. The fish would not hit it the bait if it was breaking the surface. To do this, I add a tungsten nail weight into the nose of the bait. This adds just enough weight to keep it under the water and still allow me to work it at a pretty good speed. Locations for both of these baits remain similar to last week. Flat points and humps in 25-30 FOW in the down stream 1/2 of the major creeks and on the main lake. While brush is in the area, many of the fish were not in or on top of the brush. They were just in the neighborhood.

DS Setup: 6’10 St. Croix Rods Legend X MLXF rod paired with a Shimano 2500 Stradic. I fill half to two thirds of the spool with cheap line then use 12lb CAST braid for the remainder of the spool. Right now I am using a 6-8ft 6lb Sunline Sniper leader. My hook of choice is a 1/0 or 2/0 Owner down shot anchored by a 3/16oz tungsten sinker.

Soft Jerk Bait set up: St. Croix Victory 7’1 MHF Max-Finesse spinning rod with a 3000 Shimano Stradic. I spool this reel with 20lb Cast Fishing Co - USA X12 braid and a 1-2ft 12lb Sunling sniper fluorocarbon leader. I Texas rig the soft jerk baits on a 4/0 Owner offset worm hook with a tungsten nail weight in the nose. I do not run a swivel on this set up and have minimal issues with line twist.

For the remainder of August, I have the 14-16, 19-25, 28th available.

If you are looking for more detailed information, I publish a daily video covering the where, what, and how I caught fish that day. You can sign up at https://jeffnail.uscreen.io
