Lake Lanier Weekly Fishing Report

Water Level: 2.27 feet BELOW full pool.
Water Temp: Mid to upper 80s.
Water Clarity: Main lake and main creeks on the South end are clear. There is increasing color in the water as you go back in the main lake creeks and up the rivers above Browns Bridge
After four weeks away, it is great to be back on the water. I have been on the water five of the last seven days. It is August and the water is only slightly cooler than bath water. This can be one of the hardest months of the year to fish Lanier. I would classify this week as “good” solely because decent numbers of fish were caught this week. Although size may be harder to come by, there are still fish that will bite and the chance exists for a true magnum too.
The two best baits for me this week were the drop shot with a 6in Aaron’s Morning Dawn Robo worm and a PB&J Trixster baits dock rocker jig. For both of these baits, I am casting them on flat points in 25-30 FOW and fishing it back to the boat slowly. Most of the bites come when I pause after a drag. While brush is almost always in the area, many of the fish did not come out of the brush itself. If you do not have FFS to target these schools of fish, don’t be afraid to make some casts to the left and right of your waypoints; especially if there is cloud cover.
For the jig, a cinnamon black 4in twin tail trailer was more productive than the 5in. The 4in has a thinner profile that the fish seemed to prefer this week. The jigs also produced a few fish around docks this week.
The Trixster Tricky Shad in pearl gets honorable mention this week. I only really threw it one day, but I had decent success for the few hours it was used. I rigged this bait “Texas style” with a 3/64oz nail weight in the nose to help keep it slightly below the surface of the water. As above, flat points in 20-30FOW were the targeted area.
DS Setup: 6’10 St Croix Legend X MLXF rod paired with a Shimano 2500 Stradic. I fill half to two thirds of the spool with cheap line then use 12lb CAST braid for the remainder of the spool. Right now I am using a 6-8ft 6lb Sunline Sniper leader. My hook of choice is a 1/0 or 2/0 Owner down shot anchored by a 3/16oz tungsten sinker.
Jig Setup: 7’ MHF Legend X with a Shimano Chronarch spooled with 12lb Sunline Sniper.
For the next two weeks, I have the 5-6, 9-16 available.
I also have the afternoon of Monday, 7 Aug available for trip on Allatoona.
