Lake Lanier Weekly Fishing Report
May 3, 2024
Water Level: The lake level has fallen over the past week to .24 feet ABOVE full pool.
Water Temp: Temps mellowed out a little bit with the cold fronts. I am seeing 68-72 on Garmin.
Water Clarity: The lake is clearing up with the main lake being clear and the rivers above hwy. 369 starting to look more like summer clarity than winter/early spring.
I have been on Lanier for 7 of the past 7 days. Similar to last week, the fishing has been good to very good depending on the day. It has been a roll of the dice on which category any given day will be.
As has been the case for the past few weeks, we have been focusing on shallow water. However, there are more fish that are moving out to deeper water following the spawn. Speaking of the spawn, there are still fish in all stages of he spawn. That being said, I do think we are on the back half of the spawn. Above 369 most of the fish are post spawn while on the south end, numbers of pre and post spawn fish is more balanced.
A new technique came into play this week. The new Ozark colored 5.4 Cast Fishing Co - USA Echo rigged on a 1/4oz scrounger head has been very effective in herring spawn type areas where the bass are not wanting to commit to top water presentations.
For retrieve, the key word is SLOW. This accomplishes two things: 1) it provides a very natural presentation of a disoriented herring IE easy meal and 2) the slow speed cuts way down on the amount of twisting that can happen with these types of head.
For equipment, we are throwing this bait on a medium action rod. I have used a medium heavy, but the hook up ratio on the medium has been better. My St. Croix Rods 6’8” MXF Victory casting rods have worked very well, better than my 7’1” MHF. I am using a 7:1 reel spooled with 12lb Sunline Sniper Fluorocarbon. I have used several heads and the Hog Farmer head has performed best for me thus far. Here is a link to the heads:

In addition to the echo, top water, pitch shot, Tricky Shads, and Jerk Shads have all played a role over the past week.
The daily videos I publish cover these techniques in greater detail and all other techniques that were effective over this past week. In these videos, I cover the conditions, part of the lake, and how I caught fish (or did not) for most days that I am on the water. All subscribers will have access to all historical videos as well (250 previous videos). You can sign up and view videos at https://jeffnail.uscreen.io
For the new few weeks, I have the following dates available: May 11-13,16,19-21. If you are interested in a trip, please reach out and I will get you on the calendar.
