Lake Lanier Fishing Report June 17th - 23rd, 2023
Lake Lanier Weekly Report
23 June 2023
Water Level: From last week, the lake has risen to 1.73 feet BELOW full pool.
Water Temp: After seeing temps in the low 80s early in the week, the two days of 60-degree temps and mist dropped the surface temps back the 77-78 range on Lowrance.
Water Clarity: As has been the case for the past few weeks, the water is clear on the main lake with an increasing amount stain as you go back in the major creeks and up the rivers, especially above 369. Stained to muddy water can exist in shallow water on the weekends due to heavy boat traffic. Offshore watercolor will remain stable.
I have been on the water for the past 6 days. This week was the best week thus far this June. Lanier rewarded those who braved the elements on Wednesday and Thursday with some of the best fishing this spring. The old saying held true, poor weather for the fisherman is good weather for the fishing.
The predominate bait this week was the Lanier Baits Jerk Shad in Blue Ghost. I am working this bait quickly off the ends of points that have brush in the 20-30 foot range. When working this bait, I never stop moving the real handle or the rod, both are in constant motion. This presents the bait in a very erratic manner. I rig this bait Texas style on a 4/0 Owner worm hook with a treble stinger. This helps with hooking up with some of the fish that just swat at the bait or hit the tail.
Another productive technique this week was a 6” roboworm (Martins Madness and Aarons Morning Dawn) fished around any vertical structure that had suspended fish. I rig this worm Texas style on an Owner 2/0 down shot hook and a 3/16oz cylinder sinker. I then pitch the bait up next to the structure and allow it to fall through where the fish are suspended. If the line stops moving too soon, it’s a bite. If I get through the fish and have not had a bite, I will hold the worm in place for a few seconds and shake it. If still no bite, I will real it up and repeat the process.
Another honorable mention is the Slick Stick. I had some success throwing a bone colored one early in the mornings when fish were running bait but did not want to hit a TW lure.
I still have a walking TW and a chug bug tied on and both put a few fish in the boat this week as well. I will have a walking and chugging type bait on the deck from now through October. I may not throw them nonstop, but they will be ready anytime fish decide to show themselves.
For June, I have the 24-26th, 30th. For July, have the 1st and 2nd and then I am off to my favorite place for the month. It seems to be the best time to get away from the heat and boat traffic. I am only running ½ day trips on the weekends. Additionally, if you prefer an afternoon to dark trip, that is available as well. Please reach out if you are interested in getting out on the water.
