Lake Lanier Weekly Report December 19th - 23rd

Lake Lanier Weekly Report for 22 December 2022.

  • Water Temp: 49-55

  • Water Clarity: Clear on the main lake, stained to heavy stain in the backs of the creeks and up the Chestatee.

I’m going to go ahead and write this as I will not be on the water tomorrow. There is a time and a place to be hard, and at this point in my life, it’s not tomorrow on the Lake.

I wrapped up my best week of December today. Generally speaking, the worse the weather is for the fisherman, the better it is for the fishing. This week, and specifically today proved that again to be true with a 30+ fish day today.

This week, I focused almost entirely on two things; ditches and deeper road beds. The bass have definitely started to group up in bigger schools. I’m fishing edges of large bait balls or secondary ditches that are near creek channels that are loaded with bait.

The finesse swimbait ruled the roost for me this week. I fished it very slowly along the bottom of the ditches and along deep road beds. A very slow steady retrieve, rod tip high, and constant contact with the bottom. Bites are nothing more than a tick. If you make a turn of the reel handle after the strike and the fish is not there, just let the bait sink to the bottom for a few seconds. Many times the fish will come back and pick up the bait.

Today, I also found a spoon bite in a 1/2 oz gold war eagle spoon. I target schools that showed up under the boat. Often, these schools showed up following a fish I had hooked on a swimbait.

Honorable mentions this week include the DS fished vertically and a shakey head on steep rock on the sides of ditches and along timber lines. Additionally the Spot Choker underspin boated a few solid fish today as well.

My set up for the finesse swim bait is a 6’8 MXF St. Croix Rods Legend Tournament rod; 2500 series Shimano Stradic, 12lb Cast Fishing Co - USA braid mainline and a 8LB sunline leader. Generally I throw a 3/8oz jig head for both my Kietech and Prodigy swimbaits. The dirty jigs Guppy head on the Kietech and the Queen tackle sonar head for the prodigy.

I have the 26th and 27th available if anyone wants to get out. Other than that, I’m booking for January.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.
