Water Temp: Temps have risen to the upper 80s low 90s.
Water Clarity: Nothing significant to report on water clarity. Typical clarity for August.
After a better than expected July, the calendar has turned to August and the fish are acting like it is, well, August. August can be one of the most difficult months on Lanier. High water temps take its toll on fish and high air temps take its toll on the anglers.
Over the past two weeks, I have had the most success with a Drop Shot. The Drop Shot is a staple of my dog days of summer arsenal and can produce both size and numbers of fish.
I am focusing on points and humps near the main river and creek channels that have sharp drop offs. Generally, I have been in the first 1/3rd of the creeks arms. I am looking for brush in the 25-35ft range and pitching the DS out to the brush for the first cast. Afterwards, I will drop straight down on schools of fish.
If I cannot get bit on the standard 6in Roboworm, I will drop down to a 4in version. Additionally, as conditions get tougher, I will drop my leader weight from 8lb line to 6. While it does not sound like much, the lighter line allows for a different action of the worm, and thus can trigger additional strikes from skittish fish.
I will not stay in one area for very long, I stay on the move and try to get my bait in front of as many fish as possible. As with topwater fishing, I am looking for the aggressive, hungry fish. The more fish I put a bait in front of, the more I bites I should theoretically get.
For colors, I am sticking to Roboworm’s Morning Dawn family of colors. I try to keep things simple when I can, and this is one place I can do just that.
Lastly, I have a Riser, IProp, or Gunfish on standby for schooling fish, or a school that I see up high in the water column.
The daily videos I publish offer up to date current information on what I’m doing on the water. In these videos, I cover the conditions, part of the lake, and how I caught fish (or did not) for most days that I am on the water. All subscribers have access to all historical videos (300+ previous videos). You can sign up and view videos at https://jeffnail.uscreen.io
For August, I have the 10-12, 14-20. If you are interested in a trip on either Lanier or Allatoona, please reach out and I will get you on the calendar.
